To celebrate the 15th anniversary in the organization’s history, we are bringing you a spotlight of someone who started his or her employment with Vista across each of the 15 years.
2013 – Matt Stilley
Matt joined the Vista family in May of 2013. A 2010 Messiah College graduate with a major in Human Development and Family Science, Matt worked at a day treatment facility for two and a half years after graduation. In this role, he assisted his clients with life skills and group activities within the classroom. While he enjoyed the school setting, Matt was looking for something with more structure.
Two friends from college, Derek Blauch and Ryan Johns, both worked at Vista and encouraged Matt to apply. Matt was hired for a Behavior Technician (BT) position in the middle school in May 2013. He served as a BT for nearly two years until he received a promotion in March 2015 to an Educational Behavioral Support (EBS) position. Matt served as an EBS until August 2015, when he decided to leave Vista for a short time to explore interests he had in other fields.
He worked for an engineering firm for about a half of a year when he realized he needed his work to have meaning. Matt then rejoined Vista as a Behavior Technician in March 2016 in a high school classroom. One year later, in March 2017, Matt was promoted to a Behavior Technician Supervisor (BTS) for the middle school and junior high school.
What is a day in the life of a Behavior Technician Supervisor like?
BT Supervisors must assess and identify needs across campus. Matt coordinates with the other BT Supervisors as well as teachers and Lead Behavior Technicians to ensure adequate classroom staffing. In addition, BT Supervisors typically have two to four job interviews a week.
“Interviews are an exciting opportunity to meet people and hear their passion for the field or their desire for a change. It’s always nice to have a candidate that you are excited about and to provide them with an opportunity to continue their career journey here at Vista.”
As a BT Supervisor, Matt is responsible for performance management, approval of time cards, staff reinforcement, improvement of systems and processes, and creation and updating of protocols. Matt also collaborates with other Vista departments, including Human Resources, Teachers/MDT, and Training. Some aspects of the collaboration efforts include serving as a member of steering committees to improve and create new processes across Vista.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
“I enjoy seeing the teams succeed and work together toward a common goal. Whether this is within their classroom, across the classrooms or across buildings, everyone is here and working toward the goal of student progress.”
Matt also shared that it is a pleasure to interview staff that he has worked alongside and to see them grow in their instruction and in their aptitude to support their team and students. He enjoys working with people that are interested in their career development and becoming leaders at Vista.
